SMAid International took on the noble mission of combating Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) through a series of impactful interventions. The organization worked at the national and regional levels to bolster existing NTD initiatives to support affected communities through the following activities:
Empowering communities with knowledge was at the heart of SMAid's approach. In the five districts targeted by the NTD program, they reached 36% of communities with crucial information about NTDs such as Buruli ulcer, leprosy, and other treatable conditions. Raising awareness about early detection and available treatments was a key focus, enabling communities to make informed decisions about their health.
SMAid trained one hundred dedicated community health volunteers ailing from Buruli ulcer and leprosy endemic areas to enhance early case detection and referral. Equipped with comprehensive knowledge about these diseases, these volunteers played a vital role in recognizing potential cases and ensuring prompt referral for diagnosis and treatment.
Recognizing the critical role of health workers, SMAid conducted specialized training for 89 clinical health workers. This training covered essential aspects of Buruli ulcer diagnosis, treatment, and general management of cases. By enhancing the skills of healthcare professionals, SMAid aimed to improve the overall care and treatment outcomes for individuals affected by NTDs.
At SMAid, inclusivity and compassion are fundamental principles. Regardless of religion, gender, or nationality, the organization remains committed to providing equal and compassionate care to all individuals affected by NTDs. The NTD program exemplified this ethos, ensuring that none was left behind and everyone received care.
The Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) program pioneered by SMAid International made significant strides in the fight against these debilitating diseases by providing communities with crucial information, empowering neighbourhood volunteers, and training healthcare professionals. With their commitment to inclusivity and support, they continue to be a beacon of hope for vulnerable communities worldwide. Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter, healthier future for all.
