Negleted Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Programme
Neglected Tropical Diseases are a group of parasitic and bacterial diseases that cause substantial illness for more than one billion people globally. SMAid’s control effort focuses on prevention, identification, awareness creation of the disease and treatment. SMAid uses an integrated approach in fighting against NTDs. SMAid trains health promoters and health professionals to quickly diagnose cases of Buruli ulcer, leprosy, yaws, and other NTDs, to properly treat patients, manage wounds, and educate communities on prevention strategies.
SMAid together with American Leprosy Mission (ALM) has built a wound dressing center in Kukuom Health Centre in Sunyani (Ghana).
We also partnered with the National Buruli Ulcer Control Programme (NBUCP) to equip over 200 health officials country-wide with expertise on Buruli ulcer, Leprosy, Yaws, Trachoma, etc.
The Ghana Health Service with the support of SMAid has up-scaled their efforts on NTDs management in the country from a desk office to a fully functioning secretariat. Their annual plans now make provision for the management and control of NTDs accross Ghana.
